In his first conference in 2022, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, revealed that before the end of Donald Trump’s term, he sent a letter to the then president of the United States where asked him to exonerate Australian journalist Julian Assange.

“I’m going to tell you something, because one day you will find out, Before the end of the administration of President Donald Trump, I sent him a letter asking him to be exonerated, to be pardonedYou see that at the end of the governments in the United States, the presidents can make use of this power, because I sent that letter, there was no response, but I offer to make it known today and I endorse Mexico’s commitment to comply by offering the asylum and asking the United States government for a humanitarian attitude, “he said.

The Mexican president insisted that The United States should act with “humanism” in the case of the Australian activist because the creator of the WikiLeaks portal is ill.

“We believe that the United States government should act with humanism, Assange is ill and it would be a show of solidarity, of fraternity to allow him to receive asylum in the country that Assange decided to live, including Mexico,” he said.

From the National Palace, Andrés Manuel López Obrador reiterated that the Mexican government is keeping its offer of asylum open to journalist Julian Assange.

“We have fixed our position and we are willing to offer Assange asylum in Mexico, that’s our position, “he said.

“It is very clear that the right to asylum, which is part of our foreign policy, is a pride of our foreign policy, it also has a regulation in the sense that whoever receives the benefit of asylum will act in compliance with the laws first. of our country and also could not intervene in external affairs. Assange poses no danger in Mexico“, he claimed.

Activist Julian Assange is on remand in a London jail, pending his possible extradition to the United States, which was authorized by the British Justice on December 10.

Assange, who took refuge between 2012 and 2019 in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, is accused by the United States of a score of crimes for leaking information and confidential documents on its WikiLeaks portal.
