Amtrak train collides with van in New York and causes the death of a child and two adults – La Opinion


A six-year-old child and two adults are the victims of an accident when an Amtrak train, based in New York and which connects with almost all major cities in the United States, crashed into a truck in the north of the state.

According to the details given by the police in the city of North Tonawanda, in northern New York, the three victims were traveling in the truck when the accident occurred shortly before eight p.m. last Friday.

North Tonawanda Police identified the occupants as a 69-year-old man, a 66-year-old woman and a 6-year-old man. Their names have not yet been released by officials.

Witness Chrissy Reid said a pickup truck turned right onto River Road onto Felton Street when it became trapped behind emergency vehicles, a disabled car, a tow truck and pedestrians. The truck stopped on the tracks when the crossing barriers lowered, seconds later, the violent impact occurred.

After the tragic moment, it was determined that three people were trapped inside the vehicle and needed to be extracted. Efforts were initiated to save the lives of the vehicle’s occupants, but all were pronounced deceased at the scene.

For now, Detectives are in the process of collecting all possible camera footage that may help determine contributing factors to the crash.

None of the Amtrak crew members or its 21 passengers were injured in the accident, as the train, which had left New York, was headed to Niagara Falls.

“What happened was a tragedy,” said North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec, “Our police and fire department handled the scene extremely well, but our police department has an ongoing investigation into some matters that may or may not I will be able to comment tomorrow.”

According to local media, with this accident, It is the second time this year that a vehicle was hit by a train in North Tonawanda.

On Jan. 16, a 2021 Hyundai Elantra was struck after coming to a complete stop on the tracks on Witmer Road, the outlet reported. The 29-year-old driver was rushed to an area hospital where she died.

According to Amtrak, on that occasion, the train was traveling from Niagara Falls to New York City with 11 passengers and three crew members on board. No injuries have been reported among the train’s occupants.
