Arizona police burst into a home to rescue a 6-month-old baby who had been shot several times after a suspect took the boy and his mother hostage last Friday.

The suspect, identified as Todd Christopher Marchetti, 51, forced his way into the home at 168th Avenue and Jenan Drive in Surprise around 3 a.m. and refused to let the mother and her baby leave, the police said. Surprise Police Department.

Marchetti is believed to be the child’s father, according to authorities.

Linda Ogle, a friend of the mother, told AZFamily that the victim had returned to live with her parents to escape Marchetti’s alleged abuse.

Ogle claimed that Marchetti had planned to torture the victim while his parents were out of town. He “Used an ax to break through one of the windows. He brought duct tape, rope, different shaped pliers and a couple different butcher knives,” Ogle told the station.

The resourceful mother, however, was able to escape her home around 11:30 a.m. and ask for help from a nearby construction crew, who called 911.

Upon arriving at the home, police said officers heard multiple bursts of gunshots from inside. An officer fired a bullet toward the suspect in the home, while other officers stormed inside to rescue the baby.

The boy was found with multiple gunshot wounds. Police said the baby was in critical but stable condition at a local hospital, while the mother was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

SWAT teams attempted to negotiate with Marchetti, who had barricaded himself inside the home and refused to surrender peacefully, according to police.

As the negotiations continued, around 3:00 pm a fire broke out inside the house. Firefighters could not immediately begin extinguishing the flames due to the sound of gunshots coming from inside the home.

When investigators determined it was safe to enter the home, officers found Marchetti dead inside with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police said the cause of Marchetti’s death is pending the results of a medical examiner’s report.
