WASHINGTON – The government’s top epidemiologist, the Dr. Anthony Fauci, said Wednesday that almost “everyone” will contract Covid sooner or later, but he predicted that the disease will be “less severe” thanks to vaccines and booster doses.

“Virtually everyone will be exposed and probably infected, but if they are vaccinated and receive boosters, the chances of them getting sick are very, very low,” Fauci said during the White House response team’s weekly press conference. the coronavirus pandemic.

Fauci thus endorsed the words of the acting commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA, in English), Janet woodcock, who stated the day before that “most people will end up having covid-19.”

The epidemiologist clarified that the fact that most are infected with the omicron variant of the coronavirus does not mean that most people get seriously ill from covid-19, since vaccines “improve protection against hospitalization and death.”

Fauci insisted that covid-19 “cannot be eradicated”, but defended that it will finally be controlled thanks to vaccines and booster doses, and people “are going to live with it.”

At the same press conference, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Rochelle Walensky, noted that the risk of hospitalization with the Omicron variant has been reduced by 53% compared to the delta, while the risk of entering an intensive care unit has dropped by 74% and death by 91%.

The United States broke a new record for hospital admissions due to covid-19 on Tuesday, with more than 145,000 people hospitalized in health centers due to the advance of Ómicron, which is already the dominant variant with 98% of cases and is more contagious than the previous.
