Edson Arantes Do Nascimento had a very special relationship with Queen Elizabeth II since 1968, the year they met at the express request of His Majesty when he visited Rio de Janeiro. Since then “Oh King” Pelé, considered by many to be the best soccer player in history, has professed his admiration for the deceased monarch. On this occasion he used his social networks to express his sorrow for the death of the Queen.

At the time, the highest British monarch asked to meet King Pelé and this request was immediately attended by the federations of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro with the organization of a meeting between the top figures of both states and of course with the assistance of His Majesty. On that occasion in 1968 the queen handed the match cup to the King of Soccer and she fulfilled her wish.

Through his Twitter account, the three-time world champion expressed his sorrow at the death of His Majesty. “I have been a great admirer of Queen Elizabeth II since the first time I saw her in person, in 1968when he came to Brazil to witness our love for football and experienced the magic of a packed Maracana”, he said, recalling their first meeting.

Elizabeth II’s admiration for Pelé

After meeting “King” Pelé, Queen Elizabeth II continued to show her admiration for the Brazilian star, in in 1997 he was awarded the Knight of the British Empire medal, giving him the title of Sir Pelé to the legendary Amazonian soccer player who was crowned world champion three times with the green and yellow shirt in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
