International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Karim Khan requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and top Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

As Khan said in a public statement, he has reasonable grounds to believe that both bear criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity following the October 7, 2023 attacks against Israel and the subsequent onslaught against Israel in Gaza.

Khan said he has also sought court orders against Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Galant, as well as for two other senior Hamas leaders: Mohammed Diab and Ibrahim Al-Masri.

The court’s chief prosecutor noted that the charges against Hamas leaders include extermination, murder, hostage-taking, rape and torture as of October 7.

The charges against Netanyahu and Galant, the prosecutor said, include causing famine as a method of war, intentionally causing great suffering, intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population and persecution.

For his part, the president Joe Biden described as outrageous the request of the International Criminal Court to obtain the aforementioned arrest warrant against the prime minister of Israel against possible war crimes and criticized that the court included the leader of Hamas in those warrants, as a way of implicating the same level of responsibility for the situation in Gaza, while Secretary of State Antony Blinken also criticized the court’s decision and maintained that it has no jurisdiction over this matter.
