The governor of the state of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grishamissued an emergency executive order suspended the right to carry firearms in public spaces in the city of Albuquerque, and in the surrounding county of Bernalilloduring the next 30 days.
“I welcome the debate and the fight on how to make New Mexicans safer”Lujan stated during the press conference in which he announced the measure, after ensuring that it has opened a intense debate within the security forces and bodies of this state located in the south of the United States.
When did the ban go into effect?
The decision, which came into force last Friday, comes after the number of shootings has increased in New Mexico in recent weeks and just one day after the death of an 11-year-old boy after being hit by a bullet on the eve of a baseball game in Albuquerque.
In fact, this event caused the governor to define last Thursday as a “gun violence epidemic” the situation in Bernalillo, where an average of more than 1,000 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.
