Police reported Wednesday that human remains found in San Francisco Bay a few days ago have been identified as those of a 22-year-old Netflix software engineer who apparently took his own life.
A boater found the remains of Yohanes Stefanos Kidane northeast of the Golden Gate Bridge shortly after 11:40 a.m. on Aug. 29, according to a news release from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
The Coast Guard recovered the remains and paramedics pronounced Kidane dead shortly after, according to police, who initially reported that his identity was unknown because the body “showed signs of advanced decomposition, prolonged exposure to the aquatic environment and appreciable predation“.
Authorities formally identified Kidane two days later, on Aug. 31, and notified his family of his death, according to the sheriff’s office.
A post-mortem forensic examination conducted on September 1 by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Division determined that Kidane committed suicide.
Kidane lived in San Jose but was originally from Webster, New York, a city about 90 miles northeast of Buffalo, according to police, who added that He currently worked as an engineer for Netflix.
Family members told NBC Bay Area that Kidane recently graduated from Cornell University and had moved to the Bay Area to start a new job at Netflix.
The young man graduated this year from Cornell with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, according to Joel Malina, vice president of university relations.
“We are devastated by the tragic nature of his passing and encourage everyone who knew him on campus to seek help as they struggle with this loss. Our deepest condolences go out to Yohanes’ family and friends,” Malina said in a statement provided to NBC News.
