The alleged gunman accused of killing 5 people and injuring 19 others in a mass shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, last November he faces 12 additional charges, bringing his total felony charges to 317, according to CNN.
Anderson Lee Aldrich appeared in court in person Friday and Colorado Fourth Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen announced the new felony charges, including four counts of attempted murder and two hate crimes.
Aldrich, 22, was initially indicted in December on 305 counts, including counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault and hate crimes motivated by bias causing bodily injury.
The new charges were added for two additional victims present at the Q club during the shooting, prosecutor Allen said.
Aldrich, whose lawyers say he identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, faces life in prison without parole if convicted of the first degree murder charges.
The suspect allegedly entered Club Q late on November 19 with an assault weapon and handgun and opened fire, killing Daniel Aston, Raymond Green Vance, Kelly Loving, Ashley Paugh, and Derrick Rump. At least 19 other people were injured, police said, most of whom suffered gunshot wounds.
The attack was stopped by two patrons who knocked down and restrained the suspect until police arrived at the club, which was considered a safe space for the LGBTQ community in Colorado Springs.
Before an earlier hearing, Aldrich’s lawyers said the suspect identified as non-binary and would be treated as Mx. Aldrich: A distinction Allen said would have “no impact” on his office’s prosecution of the case.
