The match between Argentina and Mexico last Saturday was of high tension for both squads because they were risking their lives in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino was the main target after the defeat due to the tactical approach he used, but also because of a gesture he made seconds before Lionel Messi’s goal.
It was around minute 64 with a Mexican team defending in a low block with a line of five, when Ángel Di María put a ball from the right wing to the center and ‘La Pulga’ received near the midfield.
The 10 grabbed the ball with space to comfortably hit the goal. Seconds before he shot a strong, creeping finish to Guillermo Ochoa’s post, a recording captured the reaction of the band’s Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino.
In the audiovisual you can see how the strategist does a small kick in the air announcing or wanting the shot that Messi finally executed and would end in the first goal for the Albiceleste.
The images were shared through the TikTok social network by a user who goes by the name of Eglatete. In the description of the video you can read a strong message to Martino. “Don’t even think about going back to Mexico,” he wrote.
This reaction from Martino caused a stir among the Aztec public opinion, since not only did the fans harshly criticize the DT, but they also accused him of being unprofessional and having delivered the game to his native team.
Such was the case of journalist Álvaro Morales, who lashed out at Martino and accused him of letting Mexico lose. “I told you! I told you! Martino delivered the game tactically”.
“What did we expect if we have the Trojan Horse at home? Who the hell did he want to win? Us? Who were you directing for? For us or for them? Who pays you the money? Your almost three million a year, they are not going to pay you elsewhere (…) only we pay you ”, he added.
The Mexican team will now have to win in its last match against Saudi Arabia by a score of three to zero, not conceding any goals and for Argentina to beat its similar Poland 2-0 or more. All this to be able to access the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar 2022.
Otherwise, El Tri would say goodbye to the fourth game in this World Cup. A scenario that has not been known for almost 30 years, since Mexico has qualified for the round of 16 since 1994.
