Thomas Eric McDowell, a 61-year-old man, was arrested this week and faces charges of murder, kidnapping and robbery in first grade for the disappearance of Jessica Gutiérrez in 1986, who was barely 4 years old at the time.
In a press release, the Sheriff’s Office of Lexington County reported that the man, from North Carolina was arrested thanks to more than a hundred new interviews, as well as reviewing thousands of pages of case files, reported NBC.
“Thanks to the work we did, coming together as a team, we were able to sort and place more pieces of the puzzle than what happened to Jessica so many years ago,” said Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon.
The FBI also participated in the investigations.
Debra Gutierrez, the mother of the little girl, He told a year ago that on the night of July 5, 1986 he took his daughter to sleep and the next morning she was gone. The authorities, according to local media, found McDowell’s fingerprints in the Gutiérrez house.
The little girl’s brothers say they did not see her.
Investigations revealed that someone had entered the family home and taken the little girl. So far, Jessica’s body has not been located.
