A suspect was killed and several police officers were injured after they were hit by gunfire. during a U.S. Marshals Task Force investigation in Charlotte, North Carolina, Monday afternoon.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported that “numerous” officers were shot at the scene in the 5000 block of Galway Drive, in the Shannon Park neighborhood.

The shooting began when the U.S. Marshals Task Force attempted to serve a court order, police said according to Fox News.

At 2:23 p.m., police confirmed that a SWAT team was on the scene and urged residents to stay inside their homes.

“The CMPD SWAT team is on scene and continues to work the incident. This remains an active scene. Please avoid the area,” post X said.

The US Marshals Task Force was then “confronted by active gunfire from a subject.” As of 3:35 a.m., the situation was still considered active and several victims were taken to local hospitals, according to authorities.

“Avoid the area. Many roads are closed to allow faster ambulance transport. Please cooperate with the authorities,” the police department warned.

Just after 4:50 p.m., police said the residence on Galway Drive was clear and the area is safe. At least one shooting suspect was found dead in the home after clearing the scene, according to police. post on.

CMPD said it was questioning two other occupants of the home.

Some roads in the neighborhood will remain closed, but residents no longer needed to shelter in place.

It is not clear exactly how many officers were injured or what their conditions are. On Monday afternoon, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper confirmed that his office was aware of the shooting.

“I am in contact with authorities regarding the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area and we have offered state resources to assist,” Cooper wrote on X.

CMPD and other law enforcement agencies will be on scene to conduct the investigation.
