David Benavídez responds to Canelo Álvarez’s mockery and asks him to buy “a couple of eggs” – La Opinion

Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez mocked David Benavídez on Tuesday in Los Angeles regarding what the fighter of Mexican and Ecuadorian blood would contribute in a fight between them. A day later, the so-called “Mexican Monster” responded to the biggest current star in boxing.

During the press conference held in Beverly Hills to promote his fight with Jaime Munguía, Canelo Álvarez said that the only thing Benavídez would bring to the table was “25 extra pounds” and that the only way he would take a fight with him would be if a promoter offered him $150 million dollars or $200 million.

Benavídez, clearly the biggest threat to Canelo at super middleweight, responded on Wednesday with a post on his Instagram account.

“@canelo if I have nothing to offer you why are you (sic) asking for 150-200 million to fight someone who is worthless?” Benavídez wrote. “Hopefully after you earn that money you will have enough left over to buy a couple of eggs.”.

David Benavídez, the biggest threat to Canelo Álvarez

A fight between Canelo and Benavídez has been the dream and demand of the majority of the boxing public for at least a year. It would be a very lucrative lawsuit, extremely interesting, but undoubtedly dangerous for the man from Guadalajara.

While Álvarez (60-2-2) continues to be among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and is coming off a refreshing performance against Jermell Charlo in September, he has already accumulated four fights in a row without winning by knockoutincluding his loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022.

Benavídez (28-0), for his part, has continued to raise his bonuses with convincing wins over Caleb Plant and then Demetrius Andrade last November, when he defended for the second time his interim super middleweight title of the World Boxing Council (WBC), the division in which Canelo is the undisputed monarch.

The “Mexican Monster”, as Mike Tyson baptized him, is six years younger than Canelo, he throws a lot of punches, has punching power, is physically larger and has shown an equally good chin than the redhead.

Smart decision by Canelo, but with a low-level excuse

Knowing the risk of a bad defeat against a rival who is very capable and hungry to want to displace him from the throne, Canelo Álvarez has ignored Benavídez’s constant challenges. This is a decision that experts consider logical. It is also normal for the greatest figure in boxing to choose the rivals that best suit him.

However, Canelo’s excuse that Benavídez would only add weight to him is not fortunate and makes it clear that he does not plan to face him in any wayas he stated in Beverly Hills, where the other protagonists of the event also agreed that Jaime Munguía got his opportunity with Canelo because he has shown respect for the champion at all times.

Benavídez and his team, on the other hand, have been aggressive in trying to get the opportunity, sometimes with provocative statements that have allegedly offended the Álvarez camp.
