The Mexican team was eliminated in the group stage of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. El Tri had one of the worst tournaments in recent years led by Gerardo Martino. Edson Álvarez offered his considerations about that tournament and some controversial decision by “Tata”.
Mexico could not advance to the round after being paired in a group with the teams of Argentina, Poland and Saudi Arabia. Edson Álvarez frequently shared the tactical decisions of “Tata”, but in the duel against Argentina he did not recognize it.
After having started against Poland, Gerardo Martino decided to leave Edson Álvarez on the substitute bench against the Albiceleste team. More than a year has passed since that match and “Machín” still questions the reasons for this decision.
“In the World Cup I didn’t feel like an undisputed starter, but I felt like I had a good chance of playing. In the game against Poland, everything was even going well, the relationship with him was the same as always. The game against Argentina arrives and pretend that I was a stranger, as if I had never seen myself play, I didn’t start and I didn’t play“Edson Álvarez recalled in an interview with Caliente TV.
Edson Álvarez was one of the players who gave balance to the Mexican team in the middle of the field. Against Argentina, “Machín” could have been a good muscle in that sector and perhaps would have made things much more difficult for the Albiceleste team. But Martino did not have that reading.
Good relationship with “Tata”
Gerardo Martino left through the back door of his process with the Mexican team. There were many criticisms about the management of “Tata” and, after his departure, some players questioned several of his decisions. However, Edson Álvarez’s experience was not bad.
The former Ajax Amsterdam player revealed that his relationship with Gerardo Martino was very close. The “Machín” thanked the experiences with the former FC Barcelona coach.
“I am grateful, at some point I had a great relationship with ‘Tata’. A relationship in which he came with me, we chatted, we shared ideas. He is a person who really likes to talk about football and was very interested in the Ajax system, we shared many things“, he concluded.
