Gerardo Pimentel, better known as “Zopi”, bassist and founder of the iconic Mexican reggae band Los Rastrillos, died from myeloid leukemia.

The musician, broadcaster and cyclist died on Monday, at the age of 55, after more than two years of fighting the disease.

The news about his death was announced by the Ministry of Culture of Mexico City, but also by several of his colleagues from the group Los Rastrillos, of which he had been a part since 1989.

“Zopi” was diagnosed with cancer at the end of 2021 and in February 2023 he had undergone a bone marrow transplant, however, at the beginning of this month of April the leukemia reappeared and he had started chemotherapy again.”

Through his social networks, the musician used to share part of his recovery process, the last publication on his Instagram is from January 1 of this year, with several photographs of his days in the hospital and his improvements.

“These are some moments that marked me in 2023, but above all that were part of these two years of struggle to regain my health since I was diagnosed with Leukemia. Infinite gratitude to all of you. We wish you the best for 2024 and above all good health. Blessings. One Love,” she expressed at the bottom of the images of her.

His last days he was hospitalized at the National Cancer Institute due to complications of the disease.

The artist is considered an icon in the reggae genre in Mexico; Over more than three decades with Los Rastrillo he released albums such as Revolución Latinoamericana (1992), 4 Vientos (1998), Codes of the Soul (2000), Se Acabó El Reve (2005), and Luces (2013).

As a presenter he stood out in the program Reggaevolución, broadcast on radio Reactor 105.7 and he was a lover of cycling, a sport he practiced.
