The Guatemalan team Malacateco will look for starting this Thursday, by the hand of his coach, the Mexican Roberto Hernandez, the first title in its history in local football when face double play in the final of the Apertura 2021 tournament at Comunicaciones.

The first match of the final will be played this Thursday at the Santa Lucía stadium in the department of San Marcos, adjacent to Mexico and where the Malacateco has become strong during the contest.

Precisely the team of the Mexican coach Hernández has been the great surprise of the championship, after going from penultimate place on date 6, to fourth place in the final table of the qualifying round.

Later, the Malacateco left the champion on the road Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa and to Ancient, leader of the qualifying stage, in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

At the other extreme, the Uruguayan communications technician, William Coito Olivera, is looking to get his fourth local title in soccer in Guatemala.

Coito Olivera led his team to the final after eliminating last Sunday in the semifinals at Municipal, directed by the Paraguayan José Cardozo.

The Uruguayan coach has already been champion with Communications in 2014 and 2015, in addition to conquering another local tournament in 2020 with the Guastatoya.

Coito Olivera also led the Communications to win the Concacaf League on December 14, the first international title of a Guatemalan club in 17 years.

“We were looking for this from the start of the tournament. It’s going to be a nice match. We are ready and now we are here“, Assured to journalists the defender of the Communications, Nicolás Samayoa.

In the same way, his partner, also defender José Pinto, considers that “the two best teams in the tournament” will reach the final, so it will be a “complicated” match.


The Malacateco reached its first final in the Guatemalan Major League in 2019, but succumbed to Antigua, so now it seeks to lift its first trophy as champion.

The first leg is scheduled for 11:00 local time on Thursday (18:00 GMT), while the return will be next Sunday, at the stadium Doroteo Guamuch Flores, from the Guatemalan capital, at 20:00 local time (02:00 GMT on Monday).
