Óscar de la Hoya does not understand Canelo’s decision to avoid Benavídez: “I would fight him instantly” – La Opinion

During his professional career that spanned from 1992 to 2008, Óscar de la Hoya always faced the biggest boxing stars and for that reason several of his fights became historic events of profits and audience in the sport of fists.

For this reason, the “Golden Boy” does not understand Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez’s decision to avoid a megafight that the boxing world is crying out for against David Benavídez, the Mexican-American fighter who has earned enough merit to receive the opportunity to compete. to the biggest current star in boxing.

During Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney’s chaotic promotional event in Los Angeles on Thursday, La Opinión asked De la Hoya his opinion regarding the discussed issue of Canelo avoiding a fight with Benavídez at all costs..

“People are getting on Canelo. “I don’t know the reason why Canelo doesn’t want to fight Benavídez,” De la Hoya responded. “I don’t understand it because I would fight him instantly if I were active.”

The Canelo-Benavídez issue gained further echo earlier this week when Canelo reportedly decided to opt out of his three-fight contract with PBC after only one fight because the Mexican did not want to face Benavídez in September.

These events led Canelo to unofficially return with Matchroom Boxing-DAZN, where they profile fights between Álvarez and two Latin fighters: the Mexican Jaime Munguía and the Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga.

De la Hoya added about Canelo’s decision, for whom he was a promoter several years before there was an abrupt breakup between them: “I don’t understand why he doesn’t want to fight him. because [entre] The more time passes, the better Benavídez is as a fighter and Canelo is going down, because he is obviously not in his peakso I don’t understand what the reason is.”

A war between Mexicans awaits De la Hoya

However, Canelo Álvarez’s alleged decision to deny the public a long-awaited fight in boxing against the fearsome “Mexican Monster” would give Óscar de la Hoya and his promoter the opportunity to be part of a lucrative event, possibly in this same May, if Canelo decides to face Munguía, whose promoter is Golden Boy.

Regarding what the public would get if this lawsuit were to take place, De la Hoya could not hide his excitement.

“A war. They are both coming towards the front and it would be a war. That’s why I’ve always asked for it. A fight between two Mexicans has not happened in years, in years, since Erik Morales and [Marco Antonio] Barrier… watch that fight on YouTube and you’ll know what I’m talking about.”
