The violence broke out in the Paraguayan stadium: Libertad vs. Olympia left 61 detainees

At least 61 people, including several minors, were arrested in Paraguay as a result of the shocks that occurred during and after a football match between the local clubs Libertad and Olimpia, which the referee suspended amid violence in the stands, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The prosecutor of the Specialized Security and Coexistence Unit, Ángel Ramírez, confirmed to local radio stations that the detained minors have already been handed over to their parents.

A source from that unit told Efe that between seven and nine minors under the age of 18 were arrested.

Ramírez assured that he is collecting evidence through closed circuit cameras installed around the Defensores del Chaco stadium, located in Asunción, to formulate individual imputations.

Among others, he stated that those involved may face prosecution for violating article 15 of the law on non-violence in stadiumswhich foresees a custodial sentence of six to twelve monthsas well as the prohibition to enter sports spaces for a term of three to five years.

They can also be charged with disturbing the public peace, which carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.

The brawl took place during the match which was played on Wednesday night for the round of 16 of the Copa Paraguay, in which Libertad beat Olimpia 4-0.
