Two children were killed and more than a dozen people were injured, several of them seriously, when a vehicle driven by an alleged drunk driver crashed at a birthday party Saturday at a yacht club, a Michigan sheriff said.

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said an 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother were killed when a 66-year-old woman crashed 25 feet into a building around 3 pm at the Swan Creek Boat Club, in Berlin Township, about 30 miles south of Detroit.

“First aid was provided to approximately 15 victims, including adults and young children,” Goodnough said at a news conference Saturday night.

The two little brothers were pronounced dead at the scene, Goodnough said. Nine other people (six adults and three children) were transported by helicopter or ambulance to area hospitals with serious or life-threatening injuries, he added.

Several more people were taken to area hospitals in private vehicles.

Nine of the injured, including three children, have been reported in critical condition..

The sheriff did not identify the woman who crashed her car into the building, but explained that she is 66 years old, that she was detained without resistance and that she was driving while intoxicated.

The vehicle collided with the north wall of the facility, entered the building and stopped after traveling 25 feet into the building. where a little boy’s birthday party was taking place.

“It is likely that additional criminal charges will be filed against the driver as the investigation progresses,” said Goodnough, who said investigators continue to process evidence at the scene, identify victims, interview witnesses and reunite family members.
