Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Field Operations officers seized six and a half tons of methamphetamine valued at more than $117 million dollarsthe largest amount ever confiscated at a port of entry on the border in a single action, the federal agency reported in a press release.

“This massive methamphetamine seizure, the largest ever detained by CBP officers at a port of entry, uniquely illustrates the serious narcotics threat our officers face daily and their effectiveness in using our enforcement technology tools.” the law, knowledge and experience to reduce these threats to zero,” said Laredo Field Operations Director Donald Kusser.

The drug seizure occurred on Sunday, February 18 at the Camino Real International Bridge, when a CBP officer referred a tractor-trailer containing a shipment of piglet desiccant agent for secondary inspection.

Following a canine examination and non-intrusive inspection system, CBP officers discovered a total of nearly 13,101 pounds of suspected methamphetamine inside the conveyance. The narcotics had a street value of $117.1 million.

CBP seized the narcotics and Homeland Security Investigations special agents are investigating the seizure.

“Thanks to the excellent teamwork between HSI Houston, HSI Eagle Pass, HSI Mexico City and our partners at CBP, we have prevented a record amount of these narcotics from reaching Houston, where they would have destroyed an untold number of lives,” said the Special Agent in Charge Mark Dawson, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Houston.
