The international union of professional footballers, FIFPRO, and the World Leagues Association have asked FIFA to withdraw the international calendar and commit to rescheduling the 2025 Club World Cup.

“In the event that FIFA refuses to formally commit to resolving the issues raised at its next Council, “We will be forced to advise our members on the options available to them, both individually and collectively.”they state in a letter sent to FIFA, to which EFE had access.

The letter, dated May 2 and signed by Stephane Burchkalter and Jerome Perlemuter, as general secretaries of FIFPRO and the Association of Leagues, respectively, adds that “These options include legal actions against FIFA”, on which they have already “entrusted the advice of external experts”

“Sports governing bodies, such as FIFA, must adhere to transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate safeguards, given their inherent conflict of interest when acting as regulators and organizers of competitions,” he underlines.

What did FIFA say?

FIFA responded this Friday to the letter sent by the international players’ union FIFPro and the World Association of Leagues requesting a rescheduling of the 2025 Club World Cup.

On the issue of the calendar, explains FIFA, it was discussed with FIFPRO and the WLF, among others, on several occasions as a fundamental part of the broader issue of the “Future of football” during 2021 and 2022.

In its letter, FIFA highlights the hypocrisy of persecuting FIFA when members of these same organizationslike the Premier League, whose general director is the President of the WLA, maintain summer tours.

“Are they also threatened with legal action?”asks FIFA in response to the introduction of international tours by members of the World League Association.

FIFA draws attention to the fact that, unlike all others, the net income of these competitions are fully reinvested in the development of world football
