Helmut Marko advises Sergio “Checo” Pérez: “You must perform consistently” – La Opinion

Sergio “Checo” Pérez is eager to start the 2024 Formula 1 season this weekend with the Bahrain Grand Prix, in what may be his last with the Red Bull team, so the Austrian team’s advisor, Helmut Marko, chose to give advice to the Mexican driver pointing to a possible renewal.

After the official tests that were carried out in Bahrain, the man from Guadalajara had a good feeling about the command of the RB20the new car of the energy drink team with which it hopes to surpass what was done last season in which, despite the runner-up position, it presented many ups and downs in its performance.

“Sergio has to perform consistently”Helmut Marko emphatically launched. “It is clear that he cannot always perform at the level of (Max) Verstappen. “If he comes second in the championship and gets a win here and there, he is certainly a contender for 2025.”He added about the Mexican’s chances of continuing at Red Bull beyond this season.

Since last season, rumors about the possibility of “Checo” Pérez leaving Red Bull began to circulate, but the Austrian team was emphatic in supporting the Mexican for this season that is about to begin and the team director himself , Christian Horner, assured that a renewal will depend on what the Mexican does in 2024.

However, Helmut Marko makes an evaluation of the possible candidates to be Max Verstappen’s teammate from next season and considers it unlikely that the Thai Alex Albon or the Spanish Carlos Sainz will end up becoming the successor of “Checo” Pérez in the Austrian team.

“Alex Albon is not a problem for us because he has a contract until 2025 (with Williams), while Carlos Sainz (who will not continue at Ferrari after this season) probably wants to make a decision before us”stated Helmut Marko during a recent interview with Kleine Zeitung.

But the Red Bull advisor did consider some names that could join the team for next season. These are the Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who already had a stint with the Austrian team, and the Japanese Yuki Tsunoda, both on the Visa Cash App RB team.

“For both drivers it is not only about staying in Formula 1 but it is also the possibility of promotion. This applies to the person who clearly dominates the team’s season.”considered the former Austrian F1 driver.

The 2024 Formula 1 season starts this Saturday with the Bahrain Grand Prix, the first test that Sergio “Checo” Pérez will have to overcome to convince Red Bull to continue having his services until 2025.
