The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obradorconsidered that a “political issue” explains the delay of the United States justice system in sentencing Genaro García Lunaformer Secretary of Public Security of Mexico who was found guilty of drug trafficking more than a year ago.

“It is also a political issue because how does so much time go by and no resolution in the United States? It is very likely that they are waiting for the (November presidential) elections to pass, but they are decisions that they make and we respect,” the president declared in his morning conference.

The Mexican president questioned the delay in setting the years that García Luna, leader of the so-called, will spend in prison. “war on drugs” and one of the closest officials of then-president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), considered López Obrador’s greatest political rival.

June 24 would be the date

The US justice system found García Luna guilty in February 2023 of four crimes related to corruption and cocaine drug trafficking that can carry life, and a fifth crime of giving false testimony to the United States authorities when he requested nationality.

But The defense has managed to postpone García Luna’s sentencing hearing several timesnow scheduled for June 24, thanks to some supposed “new favorable evidence” against which prosecutors have charged by ensuring that they are “delaying maneuvers.”

On March 1, the United States Prosecutor’s Office opposed repeating the trial against the former secretary, whom it also accused of offering money to inmates in the New York prison where he is imprisoned so that they would give false testimonies in his favor.
