Mexican soccer has a new leader. Toluca reached America and, by goal difference, he positioned himself at the top of Mexican soccer, at least for a week.

The Red Devils thrashed the Nemesio Diez Stadium at Atlas this Sunday by marker 4-1 and with the three points obtained they reached 29, the same as the Águilas, except that the Mexicans have 32 goals for and 16 against, which gives a difference of 16 goals, while América has scored less, just 22 and, although they have received only 8, their difference is still smaller, of only 14.

On the fourteenth day of the championship, Andrés Pereira, Alexis Vega, Jesús Angulo and Édgar López were the scorers for Toluca; José Lozano scored for Atlas.

Despite adding their third defeat in a row and their ninth game without winning, the Atlas remained in fifteenth place with 10 points, no longer able to advance to the second round of the Clausura.

Coach Beñat San José, who came to the Atlas bench in this competition, has not recomposed the path of the red and black team and in 13 games at the helm he has a record of two wins, four draws and seven duels without winning.

For its part, Toluca, coached by Portuguese Renato Paiva, won the first half with 58 percent of ball possession, a dominance that translated into two goals.

At minute 5, Brian García took a corner kick from the left that Pereira appeared at the second post and made it 1-0 with his right foot.

With no reaction from Atlas, Paiva’s men took advantage of a breakaway on the left wing by Chilean Jean Meneses, who crossed a service into the area that Alexis Vega finished with a header to make it 2-0.

In the second half, the San José team was unable to settle on the field and allowed Toluca to lead the way in the 67th minute when Alexis Vega outwitted a defender in the area and sent a cross to Angulo, who lowered the ball with his chest and left foot to make it 3-0.

Atlas tried to react by taking advantage of a defensive error by Toluca, when a cross from Argentine Martín Nervo put a cross behind the midfield that Lozano received between two defenders to make it 3-1 at 87.

In a counterattack, Pereira provided an assist to López, who scored 4-1 over Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas in the 93rd minute.
