The host Oprah Winfrey decided to separate from the board of directors of Weight Watchers, after having been part of the company since 2015, announcing that he will donate his shares to a good cause: a museum. His departure is recorded after admitting at the end of 2023 that he used weight loss medications.

According to information from The Hollywood Reporter portal, the journalist left her position on the board of directors of Weight Watchers, in which she has been the face and voice.

Winfrey entered the company that offers weight loss and maintenance services, investing $43 million for a 10 percent stake, The Washington Post reported.

Along with the actress’s departure, the company reported that Winfrey will donate his shares to the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), in Washington.

“Winfrey is making the donation to support NMAAHC’s goal of promoting and highlighting the contributions of African Americans and eliminating any perceived conflict of interest surrounding her taking weight loss medications,” reads the statement, reported by The Washington Post.

Although Winfrey’s departure was confirmed, she assured that she will continue to collaborate with Weight Watchers, with the purpose of expanding the conversation about obesity.

“I look forward to continuing to advise and collaborate with Weight Watchers and CEO Sima Sistani to elevate the conversation about recognizing obesity as a chronic disease, work to reduce stigma and advocate for health equity.

Weight health is a vitally important issue that needs to be addressed on a broader scale. “I plan to participate in a series of public forums and events where I will be a strong advocate for moving this conversation forward,” Oprah said in the statement.

The company’s positioning suggested that the disclosure of taking weight-loss medications could be one of the reasons, according to THR. The exit agreement also established that the businesswoman will not be able to collaborate with another company in the industry within a fixed period.
