The UANL Tigres were eliminated from the Concacaf Champions League. Robert Dante Siboldi’s team tied 1-1 at the Universitario Stadium. Penalties gave the Columbus Crew the victory and the pass to the semifinals of the competition.
The feline team was coming off a tough defeat in the Mexican Clausura. The UANL Tigres lost 0-3 in the last Liga MX game. That bad result had to be contrasted with a home victory against Columbus and, therefore, qualification for the semifinals of the Concachampions.
The UANL Tigres started the game very well. André-Pierre Gignac put the locals ahead 3 minutes into the match. With this result, the series favored the Liga MX team by 2-1.
However, the Columbus Crew would not be defeated so easily. The American team equalized in the 59th minute through Diego Rossi. With this result, the extension was the destiny of both.
The American team took control of the ball position with 54%. Even though the UANL Tigres looked more for the rival goal, The parity could not be changed and penalties defined the series.
André-Pierre Gignac went from hero to villain. The French attacker and Guido Pizarro missed the first two penalties of the shootout. Columbus Crew was effective and with scores from Rossi and Russel-Rowe they took a 0-2 lead. The comeback seemed complex and that’s how it ended up being. Columbus left the UANL Tigres on the field with the collection of Maximilian Arfsten.
