CPKC Stadium in Kansas City opens a new era in football F. Las Current, NWSL teaminaugurate the first stadium solely dedicated to women’s soccer. More than $120 million dollars of investment, 11,500 seats and an innovative ceiling to intensify the acoustic experience. The Long family, owners of the club, explain what the new jewel of the NWSL is like.
“Having your own stadium is essential. From the financial point of view It opens up many new business options that you would not have control over. Sponsorship of the name, branding, sale of food and drink, now we can control it,” said Chris Long, owner of the team with his wife Angie, in an interview.
The Long family founded the Current in 2020 and includes Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, as co-owners. The small Missouri city is familiar with the country’s large markets. The Chiefs won the last two Super Bowls, Sporting and Current drive the passion of one of the soccer capitals of the United States.
“From the beginning we felt it was essential to have our own stadium, an elite facility built for a professional women’s soccer team. That was the first point,” says Long.
Where does the money for the stadium in Kansas City come from?
The stadium project was announced after just a year of leadership by the Longs and the facility, located just steps from downtown and the Missouri River, was financed almost entirely with private money.
“It’s all private, except for a small amount of tax credit received from the state of Missouri. We have demonstrated with actions that we believe in this. We have invested more than $150 million dollars in women’s soccer. And we already see the benefits of this investment,” Long said.
Until now, the Current shared the stadium with Sporting Kansas City, after a period in which they had to compete in a baseball facility adapted for soccer.
Privacy and environment
This Saturday, March 16, they will debut, against the Portland Thorns, a small architectural gem, thought out in every detail to maximize the experience of players and fans.
The farthest seat on the field is just 28 meters away. The stadium tunnels were built to allow you to keep your eyes on the grass at all times, even when leaving your seat to buy food or drink.
But one of the most interesting features of the stadium is the custom-made roof of the stands. to intensify the sound on the field despite a capacity of 11,500 people.
