University sports in the United States are in mourning after it became known that three athletes from the University of Wyoming lost their lives in a traffic accident on a road that is known to have already been the scene of several unfortunate events of this type.

According to an ESPN report, the location of the accident in question is on a rural highway south of the Wyoming-Colorado highway between the towns of Laramine and Fort Collins. On that same highway there was already an accident that claimed the lives of eight athletes from the University of Wyoming.

In the accident, which occurred this Thursday afternoon, they died Charlie Clark, 19, a sophomore on the Las Vegas men’s team. Luke Slabber, 21, a junior on the South African men’s team, and Carson Muir, 18.a freshman on the women’s team from Birmingham, Alabama.

It was also learned that two other athletes were also injured in the accident and are expected to recover soon. Although they did not reveal the names, they are two male athletes aged 20 and 21 who were taken to a hospital in Colorado.

“My thoughts and prayers are with our swimming and diving student-athletes, coaches, families and friends. “It is difficult to lose members of our University of Wyoming family and we mourn the loss of these student-athletes.”Tom Burman, athletic director of the University of Wyoming, said in a statement.

The authorities began investigations into the case and it came to attention that the trip the athletes were taking was not official for the team. The road, which is usually quite busy, has numerous sharp curves and constant traffic leaving intersections, part of what makes it so dangerous.

A regrettable precedent

Unfortunately, this Thursday is not the first fatal accident that has occurred on that same highway and claimed the lives of University of Wyoming athletes. According to the AP news agency, In 2001, an unfortunate accident occurred in which eight athletes died..

On that occasion there was a head-on collision caused by a drunk driver, coincidentally also a student at that university, which claimed the lives of eight members of the university’s cross country team. This is Clint Haskins, who survived the accident.

The student pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular manslaughter and was paroled after nine and a half years in prison.. Haskins had deviated from his channel to end up hitting the car carrying the members of the cross country team head-on.

That road, which has become a tragic scene, is usually heavily traveled by University of Wyoming students who often make many trips to Denver and Fort Collins to shop and socialize during their free time.
