The Boston Red Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 with a home run by Tyler O’Neill, a hitter accustomed to home runs on Opening Day.

O’Neill hit his fifth consecutive home run in Opening Day games. The slugger is the only player in MLB history to have five home runs on Opening Day.

The Red Sox slugger debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018. But since 2020 he has become accustomed to hitting a home run on Opening Day.

His team has only lost one Opening Game when he hits home runs in the game. The record is four wins and one loss.

The hit hit 104.2 miles per hour with a distance of 394 feet. in right field at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park.

The rivals that O’Neill has hit home runs against: Pittsburgh Pirates (2020 and 2022), Cincinnati Reds (2021), Toronto Blue Jay (2023) and Seattle Mariners (2024).

O’Neill commented after the 6-4 victory against Seattle that he doesn’t know what makes him hit on Opening Day, but he says it’s fun when he hits those hits.

“I don’t know, it has to have something to do with the pregame ceremony or something,” O’Neill joked. “It’s fun. You always want to start the season with a bang. Fortunately, I have already been able to do it [cinco] times in a row. “I’m just having a lot of fun out there.”

“I knew what was going on, for sure,” O’Neill said. “I just wanted to be patient up there. Put something on the plate that he can handle.”

One of those who celebrated the victory with Tyler’s home run was manager Alex Cora, who ended the five-game losing streak on Opening Day.

“I’m on a five-game Opening Day losing streak and he’s on a four-game Opening Day home run streak. so Analytics,” joked Cora, who won the season opener for the first time in six tries.
