The dispute between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and The New York Times newspaper led a group of supporters of the Mexican president to demonstrate in front of the newspaper’s facilities in Manhattan.
Messages circulated on social networks and videos about the protest, many of them criticizing the complainants, who, among other things, ask them to return to live “the Mexican dream that AMLO promised them.”
During the week, the president was very critical of The New York Times for an investigation into alleged bribes that his 2018 presidential campaign received, including his children, from the Sinaloa Cartel and the Zetas Cartel.
However, López Obrador went ahead to show the questionnaire that Natalie Kitroeff, the Times bureau chief for Mexico, tried to give him during his morning conference.
The President even exposed the telephone number of journalist Kitroeff, which led to a controversy regarding the protection of personal data.unleashing a wave of reactions, many of them supporting the president.
Proof of this was the support it received in the United States, where a group of protesters, made up of migrants and AMLO supporters, prostrated themselves in front of the main entrance of the newspaper and shouted against the newspaper.
“Dear Mr. President, here are your people. The migrant people, the people who support you, Mr. President. This message is of support, it is a civic, respectful demonstration, without damaging any property. We are, just as you taught us, Mr. President. All your people are here in a respectful way, demonstrating, the people who support you, the people who will be with you, with your philosophy, You are not alone! “said one of the speakers present at this protest.
In one of the posters the American newspaper was accused of being “very famous”, but not always communicating the truth, “New York Times, how much money are you receiving to slander President AMLO?” it read.
Some of the banners also had phrases such as “The New York Times Lies”, “AMLO you are not alone”, “Honest, brave, that is my president” or “We are millions with you Mr. President.”
Also in another of the videos supporting AMLO Mexicans living in New York demanded that The New York Times have respect for the president of Mexico.
Likewise, with the phrase “you are not alone” the protesters reaffirmed their displays of solidarity and affection with AMLO, who continued with their slogans against the American newspaper.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador attributed the recent reports in ProPublica and The New York Times of US investigations into his alleged links with drug trafficking to the fact that the presidential elections in Mexico and the United States coincide in 2024.
“The elections are coming and we have to be alert. What a coincidence that now that there are elections here and there are elections there, the Nobel Prize in journalism (Tim Golden, winner of the Pulitzer Prize), twice awarded, comes to do a report, and the New York Times comes! Now, from whom? ”He declared.
The president has accused agents of the DEA and the United States Department of State of being behind these notes, who recognize that the investigations concluded without proving links and were based, for the most part, on unverified testimonies from the drug traffickers themselves.
