Middlesex County prosecutors and Woodbridge police said officers responded to the Woodbridge Township home shortly before 6:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of an unresponsive baby who was believed to have been attacked by the family dog.

Officials said officers discovered that the mother and child “had suffered serious injuries from the dog.” The baby was pronounced dead at the scene, while both parents were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The names of the victims were not immediately released and officials did not clarify the animal’s current condition. They also did not reveal the breed of the dog.according to CBS News.

Authorities described the investigation as “active and ongoing” and asked anyone with information to call Woodbridge police and county prosecutors.

Another dog attack in Nebraska

The police report indicated that the dog, a Cane Corso-mastiff mix belonging to Preister, was not present at the scene when police arrived.

Animal Control eventually located the dog at Preister’s home. Subsequently, The dog was voluntarily surrendered to the Nebraska Humane Society, where it was euthanized and tested for rabies.. According to the Humane Society, no diseases were found.

Both Danielle Stratman and Preister were later arrested on obstruction charges. The woman was also charged with violating a no-contact order after being arrested on child abuse and domestic battery charges in early February, KETV reported.

The police report also confirmed that Danielle Stratman was wearing an ankle monitor with a GPS tracker and was prohibited from seeing or communicating with her young daughter.

The girl was placed in the care of her biological father, Caleb Gómez.the police said.

Preister was also later cited for harboring a dangerous dog.

According to Forbes, about 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs annually in the United States, but only 30 to 50 people die each year from dog bites.

However, nearly 30% of fatal dog attacks involved a victim between the ages of 1 and 4, Forbes reports.
