The United States government is convinced that the Mexican cartels, especially the Sinaloa cartel and its various factions led by Chapitos, Guano and Mayo Zambada, are behind the entire fentanyl production and distribution process.

However, months ago, in an attempt to distance itself from the onslaught of the United States Government to combat drug trafficking, mainly fentanyl, In October 2023, Los Chapitos launched an alleged ban on manufacturing, marketing and trafficking fentanyl in the areas under their power, a warning that the Drug Administration Agency (DEA) described as a probable “public relations strategy.”

As reported by The Wall Street Journal in October 2023, the “Message from the Mexican Sinaloa cartel to its members was released: stop manufacturing fentanyl or die – The criminal group gives in to the intensification of police pressure from the United States and is kidnapping or killing producers who defy its ban on trafficking the opioid.”

However, The DEA categorically stated that it was an advertising hoax or a method to eliminate rivals.

In its 2024 edition of its Drug Threat Assessment, the DEA assured that the blankets that appeared in October in Sinaloa, Sonora, and the Baja California peninsula in which Los Chapitos prohibited the manufacture of fentanyl was a publicity show that had no effect in the availability of the drug.

“In October 2023, “Los Chapitos orchestrated a publicity show by supposedly enforcing the so-called prohibition by hanging blankets in prominent places in Sinaloa, Sonora and Baja California.”says the DEA in its 57-page annual report that covers various aspects of drug trafficking to the United States.

“However, the ban is probably a public relations stunt or an attempt by the cartels to consolidate production among a smaller number of trusted manufacturers and punish others.”

According to the DEA, Total fentanyl seizures made by the agency itself during calendar year 2023 reached record levels with some 79 million fentanyl pills and 6.8 tons of fentanyl powder, which would demonstrate the wide availability of the drug that will cause 75 thousand deaths in 2022.

According to authorities, the widespread use of fentanyl, a synthetic painkiller 50 times more powerful than heroin, is considered to be the culprit behind the increase in drug-related deaths in the North American country.

The use of fentanyl has spread in the United States in recent years, becoming a major political and health problem.

Its use and impact have grown exponentially. In 2016, fentanyl was behind 62% of overdose deaths in Washington. In 2022, it was the cause of 96% of deaths related to drug abuse.
