Authorities reported that gunman who pointed gun at Pennsylvania pastor during sermon broadcast live He has been accused of shooting his cousin to death a few hours before the incident took place inside the church.
Bernard Polite, 26, was charged with murder Tuesday night after the body of his 56-year-old cousin, Derek Polite, was discovered in his North Braddock home Sunday night.
Family members made the grim discovery after going to the home to check on Derek after witnessing the horrifying video of Polite trying to shoot the pastor at Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church earlier Sunday, Allegheny County police said.
During the incident at the church, Polite was caught in the live broadcast calmly approaching Pastor Glenn Germany and pointing the firearm at him while delivering his sermon.
Polite was eventually detained after the church’s pastor and deacon managed to restrain him until police arrived.
Just hours after removing Polite, police were alerted to the body at his home less than half a mile from the church.
“After witnessing reports of the incident [de la iglesia]Derek Polite’s family members went to his residence in the 500 block of Stokes Avenue to check on his well-being and discovered him dead inside,” police said in a statement.
“Through witness interviews, detectives discovered that Bernard Polite was seen walking outside the residence on the morning of May 5, and then a neighbor reported hearing a noise that could have been a gunshot at approximately 10:00 a.m. “, indicated the authorities.
The bullet found inside the house matched the firearm confiscated by police after the church ordeal.the police said.
Following the incident at the church, the pastor said Polite had revealed to him that he had seen “spirits” in his mind telling him to open fire.
In addition to the murder charge related to his cousin’s murder, Polite is charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder over the church saga.
He is being held at the Allegheny County Jail.
