Germany began to structure the national team after failing in the last two World Cups, remaining in the group stage and now they have fired Oliver Bierhoff, director of national teams, who has been in charge since 2002.

The German coach, Hansi Flick, expressed his regret today for the resignation as director of the national team of Oliver Bierhoffmaterialized as a result of the elimination in Qatar and before the summit called for tomorrow by the German Football Federation (DFB).

“My team and I will find it difficult to fill the void that Oliver leaves, both personally and technically,” Flick stated in a statement posted on the DFB website.

“Our collaboration has always been surrounded by loyalty, team spirit and trust,” the text continues.

Bierhoff, director of the national team for 18 years, announced his resignation yesterday, four days after the disastrous elimination in the group stage, which Germany shared with Spain, Japan and Costa Rica.

“I leave the way clear for new directions,” wrote the former international, 54, in a statement released last night where he prematurely terminated his mandate in agreement with the DFB.

“In the last four years, I have not managed to bring joy back to the fans,” the text continues, where he admits that some of the decisions “that we adopt convinced” have not been the correct ones.

Bierhoff’s contract expired in 2024, meaning that he would have predictably continued in the position until the next European Championship, of which Germany will be the host country.

Bierhoff is associated with the last three consecutive “failures” of the German team -at the World Cup in Russia, where they went as defending champions, but fell in the group stage, at Euro 2021, where they were also eliminated prematurely and now in Qatar.

He had reached the national team in 2004 still with Jürgen Klinsmann as coach and after having played 70 official matches for the national team as an international footballer.

Bierhoff’s last success was the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where he won the fourth World Cup against Argentina with Mario Gotze’s mythical goal. Since then he has been knocked out at Euro 2016, Russia 2018 group stage, Euro 2020 round of 16 and Qatar 2022 group stage.
