Suspect tried to set fire to the Liberty Bell at Union Station in Washington, DC – La Opinion

Authorities reported that A suspect in Washington, DC attempted to set fire to the Liberty Bell outside Union Station.

Although it was initially said on social media that the male suspect had attempted to set himself on fire, D.C. officials clarified Sunday night that no one was injured during the incident.

“An individual attempted to set fire to the bell outside the station. “There was no person on fire, contrary to a report on social media,” he said in X. District of Columbia Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

“There are no injuries and this is a law enforcement matter,” authorities added.

The bell, popularly known as the Liberty Bell, is a sculpture designed to resemble the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. It was a gift from the American Legion, a veterans organization, a few years after the 1976 bicentennial.

The bronze bell has stood outside Union Station since 1981, more than six years after it was authorized by Congress. It is owned by the National Park Service.
