The United States team got its first victory in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after defeating its counterpart from Iran by a score of 1-0 in the last match of Group B. The Americans did their homework and managed to advance in second place after England to face the Netherlands, first classified in Group A, in the next round.
Those led by Gregg Berhalter came into the match with a knife between their teeth from the first minute and put pressure on an Iran that played with the low block to try to get a valuable draw that put them in the round of 16 for the first time.
After several offensive occasions from the United States, it was in the 38th minute when Christian Pulisic unlocked the net thanks to a header from Sergiño Dest that he finished off first in the small area. In that play he would end up colliding with goalkeeper Beiravand and was injured.
With added time already up in the first half at the Al Thumama Stadium, Timothy Weah scored the second after a pass between the lines, but it was canceled by the new offside technology.
The USMNT controlled close to 60% of the ball possession and shot more than 10 times at the goal of those trained by the Portuguese Carlos Queiroz. In the second half, Pulisic had to be replaced by Brenden Aaronson due to physical discomfort after his blow.
