Two Ohio women were charged with felony abuse of a corpse after taking a deceased elderly man to a bank to withdraw money from his account.
Loreen Feralo and Karen Casbohm The body of an 80-year-old man they lived with was taken to a bench before being dropped off at Ashtabula County Medical Center, Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell revealed.
The women initially did not give the hospital information about the man, later identified as Douglas Layman. Hours later, one of them finally called the medical center to provide her information. This is how the hospital contacted the authorities.
Both women were interviewed by police and stated that they found the man dead in his home that same day while they were living with him. They later placed him in the front seat of his car with the help of a third person.
According to a statement from the authorities, the two accused They placed the man in the car, “in such a way that he was visible to the bank staff to make the withdrawal.” They then took “an undisclosed amount of money from his account.”
For this reason, both women were accused of robbery and serious abuse of a corpse. Authorities are reviewing additional charges.
Ashtabula County Prosecutor Cecilia Cooper called the situation “very unusual” and revealed that the women withdrew around $900as reported by Fox affiliate WJW.
The outlet also noted that the bank had previously allowed the women to withdraw money from Layman’s account as long as he was in the vehicle with them.
Prosecutors said the suspects They could face up to a year in prison. Layman’s cause of death has not yet been released, and the Ashtabula Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact them.
