Chicago police announced arrest of suspect wanted in connection with the homicide of Hispanic officer Luis Huescashot dead in the early hours of April 21.
In a release posted on social media, the police department said its officers and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Xavier Tate Jr., 22, for first-degree murder.
Tate’s arrest comes five days after he was identified as the suspect in the homicide of police officer Luis Huesca, 30.
“We ask that the people of this city continue to support the Huesca family by keeping them in their prayers as they continue to mourn the loss of a beloved son, brother and uncle,” the police department said in the statement.
A few days ago, the police reported that Up to $100,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in killing the officer. in the Gage Park area on his way home from work.
Huesca, still in uniform, was shot at least 20 times near his family’s home. Sources tell FOX32 Chicago that a firearm with a “switch” attached is believed to have been used to convert it into an automatic weapon.
Huesca’s vehicle was stolen during the incident and found nearby shortly afterward, Fox News Digital previously reported, although police did not confirm whether the shooting was part of a carjacking.
The officer’s service weapon and badge were not found at the scene.sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.
When Chicago police identified Tate as a suspect on April 26, video footage was released of him inside convenience stores and outside on a sidewalk.
Tate was previously arrested for trespassing at a residence on March 6 in Olympia Fields.FOX32 reported, citing court documents. She was supposed to appear in court for that case on Wednesday of last week.
Huesca, who was killed two days before his 31st birthday, served with the Chicago Police Department for six years.
The officer was buried on Monday. “The Chicago Police Department would like to thank everyone who offered their support as we mourn the loss of Police Officer Luis M. Huesca. We honor the life of a hero who will never be forgotten,” the authorities indicated.
“Officer Huesca will be remembered for his kindness and innate commitment to service. “We will always continue his legacy in honor of him and his family,” the department added.
