Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) opened a criminal investigation into the Dali ship accident, which brought down the Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused the deaths of six construction workers, US officials told the Washington Post.
This Monday, FBI agents boarded the Dali container ship that collided and destroyed the Baltimore Harbor Bridge on March 26.
“The FBI is present on board the Dali ship and conducts police activity authorized by a court,” a spokesperson for that agency in Baltimore (Maryland) said in a statement.
The Dali, a 300-meter-long ship flying the Singapore flag, was leaving the port of Baltimore bound for Sri Lanka when it collided in the early hours of March 26 with one of the pillars in the central segment of the bridge over the Patapso River. .
Six workers carrying out maintenance work on the bridgedied in the bridge collapse and the investigation has been led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NSTB), an independent government agency.
The intervention of the FBI indicates that the investigation is looking for possible criminal causes in the fatal accident.
Anonymous sources cited by several American media indicate that at dawn this Monday three Boats arrived on the port side of the Dali and agents boarded the shipwhich is still trapped under a mass of steel.
The Washington Post newspaper indicated that almost half an hour later about 12 people, dressed in dark clothes, arrived in a smaller boat and boarded the Dali.
NSTB director Jennifer Homendy said last week that Investigators from that agency have focused their attention on the electrical power system of the ship that veered off course. and that it could have failed shortly before hitting one of the bridge pillars.
For his part, the mayor of Baltimore, Brandon Scott, announced this Monday that the city has undertaken legal proceedings and has reached an agreement with a law firm “so that those who are responsible assume their responsibilities.”
“The City of Baltimore will take decisive action to hold all entities responsible for the tragedy accountable.including the owner, shipowner, manager or operator and the manufacturer of the Dali, as well as any other potentially responsible third party,” the mayor added.
