The campus of the University of California in Los Angeles was filled with attention and violence this Wednesday after an attack the previous night against the growing group of pro-Palestine protesters which was installed in a camp in the heart of the university. Dozens of people arrived on Tuesday night and beat some of the protesters who, since Thursday of the previous week, began camping in front of the emblematic Royce Hall in protest against Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
The attack occurred before a very limited presence of security elements in the field, During the afternoon the university authorities ordered the dissolution of the protest campclasses on campus had already been suspended by then and as the hours passed there began to be greater mobilization of police who arrived by the hundreds according to estimates by reporters on the scene.
Around 4 a.m. this Thursday, officers began to clear the protester camp, Dozens of arrests and many setbacks were made as the massive operation continued.
It was not until several hours later that police began to arrive at UCLA and eventually order was maintained, In addition to protesters, other members of the University community were attacked, including some guards..
UCLA Chancellor Gene Block called the incidents a dark chapter in campus history and assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted that could lead to arrests, expulsions and dismissals.
The incidents at UCLA add to those that have occurred in recent days at other universities across the country.
