A Michigan mother faces murder charges after being accused of fatally beating her 8-year-old daughter, then claiming otherworldly forces led her to harm the child.

According to a statement from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, police responded to a call from a Phyllis Street residence about a child who was not breathing.

The agents found the minor unconscious in a bedroom and with multiple injuries to the head and neckthe prosecution said.

The girl, identified as Lyla Casselwas found wearing a diaper. The victim’s mother, Chelsea Renee Duperon30, told officers she put a diaper on her daughter because she was having trouble going to the bathroom due to her injuries, ABC7 Detroit reported.

The minor was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Duperon was arrested and charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse.

According to an officer’s statement during the swearing-in of the case, The woman first claimed that her daughter had fallen down the stairswhich caused his injuries.

At one point during the interview, officers observed Duperon with swelling in his right hand. When they asked her about her injuries, she told them that she believed her daughter had been possessed by otherworldly forces.

“It could have been saved”

The medical examiner said Lyla died from blunt force trauma to the head. “The sheer brutality that Lyla, an innocent 8-year-old girl, suffered on March 13, 2024, was unlike anything I have ever seen in my five years handling child abuse cases,” the deputy county attorney said in court. by Wayne, Erin Wilmoth.

Police believe Duperon assaulted the girl on March 13, but No one called 911 until three days later, when she was already dead.Wilmouth added, according to Fox 2 Detroit.
