The Honduran international footballer Alberth Elis has emerged from the artificial coma in which he had been placed by doctors as protection, his family announced this Wednesday.

“We are happy to share with you the first encouraging signs: Alberth is waking up and seems to be gradually recovering,” indicated a statement from the family released by the player’s club, the Girondins de Bordeaux of the French second division.

Despite everything, the family opted to “remain cautious about the evolution of his condition, since the next few days will be crucial.”

Elis suffered a severe blow to the head in a collision with Guingamp defender Donatien Gomis during last Saturday’s league match in Bordeaux.

The 28-year-old player was treated on the pitch for eight minutes before being transferred to the stadium infirmary. and then to Pellegrin University Hospital, where he was operated on that same night and placed in an artificial coma.
